Have You Heard About The "Million Word Gap"?

Written by The Eton Academy | Jan 19, 2023 8:28:22 AM

Studies from The Ohio State University have shown that children who read five books a day from birth, enter kindergarten having heard about 1.4 million more words than kids who were never read to.

This “million word gap” could be vital in explaining differences in vocabulary and reading development, said Jessica Logan, lead author of the study and assistant professor of educational studies at The Ohio State University.

Getting an early start to reading with your child is a perfect opportunity for open communication between children and parents. By listening to their parents read, children are exposed to a plethora of vocabulary, new words and even hone their listening and comprehension skills.

What books should I read to my preschool child?

Here are some of The Eton Academy’s recommended reads for preschool children. Some of you may find the titles familiar as some of the books have been featured in our curriculum too!

Do check your child’s understanding of the book and encourage him or her to extend learning with our suggested questions.

  • What did you like / not like about the story? Why?
  • Who was your favourite character? Why?
  • Did you like the way the story ended? If you could change the ending, what would you change it to?
  • What is the setting of the story? Would you like to visit that setting? Why?
  • Imagine you could become one of the characters in the story. Who would you choose? How would you describe this character to your friend?

Remember to check out your local library for the books listed or drop by The Eton Academy centres to check out our curated book corner!
